Essex Author Day!

On Saturday, I was lucky enough to be invited to be a part of Essex Author Day as part of the Essex Book Festival. And what better way to spend a Saturday than to be surrounded by other writers?

It's incredible to be in a room full of like-minded people. In this case, book lovers! There were loads of different workshops, talks, and readings for people to go to, as well as stands to visit. It was great to see so many book people!

I signed books, had a reading, and spoke to many, many people about the ZA and ZA! Gotta get people ZA ready somehow.

Thanks for having me! Sending out so much love and luck to my fellow Essex Authors! Hope we can do it again next year!

Questions for Book Lovers

I was tagged by Stories in Books to answer these super fun book questions!

1. What is the first book you read by yourself?
Matilda by Roald Dahl. I loved every page.

2. Did your parents read to you before bed? If so, what did they read to you?
Yeah, every night I think! My dad read lots of books to me and my brother. The ones I can remember off the top of my head are: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Diamond Girls, Dr Doolittle, and loads more I can't think of!

My grandad also used to read to us when we were staying. He read a load of Mr Men books, The Bad Tempered Ladybug, Meg and Mog, and a whole basket load I can't remember off the top of my head!

3. Name a movie that is better than the book?
Meet the Robinsons - it's based on a picture book by William Joyce called A Day with Wilbur Robinson. I don't have to tell you that they're not that similar at all but I'd much prefer to watch the Disney film than read the 20-odd page book. I need my complex character-arcs!

4. What was the worst movie adaptation of a book?
The Darren Shan film. Nobody go and watch it. Darren Shan himself will back me up. They utterly destroyed a fantastic book series with the world's worst film. I mean, what was with the monkey girl!

5. Outdoor or indoor reading?
Indoors. Outdoors is where the bugs live. Also I burn by so much as glancing outside.

6. Book you're most embarrassed to have never read?
Anything that people expect me to have read. I hate it when people assume I've read everything! But I would say I'm most embarrassed on the classic front. I hadn't read any Austen until last year and I've never read a whole Dickens novel either. Plus, I started Dracula in 2010 and it's up my loft somewhere with the bookmark still in!

7. Most embarrassing book you've ever read?
Embarrassing? I guess the Morganville Vampire books aren't great literature but they're so damn entertaining! I don't think I've ever been embarrassed by a book before.

8. Worst book you ever read or stopped reading?
I want to say How I Live Now but since reading that I've read The Awakening which is the first Vampire Diaries book. Please, please, please, everyone avoid it like the plague. I hear the TV series is good but I can assure you the book is unbearable. (I'm sorry L.J. Smith but I just hated Elena so much! She's super sexist towards all the men in her life and she thinks she's perfect and loved by everyone and I couldn't bear it!)

9. Do you prefer digital or paper?
Paper forever. I've never liked a book I've read on my Kindle very much and I blame the fact it doesn't smell like a book.

10. What character would you like to suckerpunch in the face?
Elena from The Awakening (Vampire Diaries) and Daisy from How I Live Now.

11. What character would you like to be best friends with?
Gaby from Paula Weston's Rephiam Series. I know we could talk and laugh all day and she'd always have my back. (She also knows how to wield a katana).

12. How many physical books do you own?
Including the books up the loft . . . It's got to be between 300-400. Can you imagine how many I'll have in ten years? Twenty? Thirty? I need a library.

13. What books do you want to make sure you read to your children?
The Harry Potter series, or at least start it with them. The Winnie-the-Pooh stories. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Bad Tempered Ladybug, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, The Tiger That Came to Tea, all of Roald Dahl.

14. What book describes you best?
I don't really understand this question. I've read a huge stack of books. So many you couldn't stack them all. And if you did and it fell over it'd kill me. I've left a piece of my soul in every book I've ever loved and that list grows longer and longer each month. There's no one book that describes me but Carrie Ryan's The Forest of Hands and Teeth trilogy remind me most of myself I guess.

15. What are you reading right now?
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. I've been so busy that I'm only about 150 pages in but it's brilliant so far!

I invite everyone to go and answer these questions, especially Adventures with Squonk and Poetic Chances.

Liebester Award Nomination

A little while ago, quite a few months now (okay I'm lying, it's been over a year!), I was nominated for the Liebster Blog Award by the lovely Fairley Lloyd. Now you should be as confused as I was when I discovered this because, hey, I've never heard of such a thing. That's okay because Fairley explained it on her blog and I'm sure she won't mind if I steal a few paragraphs!

Well, I took the time to do the research. It's pretty simple!
In the words of We Loved Here:

"The Liebster Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. So, what is a Liebster?  The meaning: Liebster is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. Isn't that sweet? Blogging is about building a community and it's a great way to connect with other bloggers and help spread the word about newer bloggers/blogs."
There are only five rules for this:

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
2. Answer the questions that the tagger set for you plus create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer.
3. Choose 11 people and link them in your post.
4. Go to their page and tell them.
5. No tag backs!

So now back to me, hi! Here are eleven things about me.

1. I'm an author who's been writing for six and a half years straight pretty much which has led to eleven books!
2. I've recently started up my own publishing company: Molten Publishing
3. I'm addicted to NaNoWriMo and plan to take part in it indefinitely.
4. I've almost got 50 books on my bookshelf I haven't been able to read yet.
5. I'm more of a fangirl than I let on. But that's okay. It's okay to get so excited about something that it makes you crazy.
6. Since discovering Movellas almost three years ago I've been as involved with the community as possible and I still can't believe that there's such a nice writing community on the internet.
7. I've self-published four of my books.
8. I wrote a trilogy before I was eighteen years old and still believe this to be one of my greatest achievements to date.
9. I love zombies and even took part in a Zombie Run in 2012 which was awesome.
10. I love dogs and have lived with at least one from the age of five until two years ago. But I've only written dogs into two of my books.
11. I've written a book review for every book I've read for the past two and half years. Now I don't think I can stop.

Q&A

1. What's the number one thing you love about reading?

Disappearing from reality and imagining things that are impossible. George R. R. Martin said "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once" and I don't think anyone's ever been more correct.

2. Who is your favourite fictional character?

What an evil question! This depends on so much! Mayor Prentiss from the Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness is my most ultimate favourite character just because he's so well constructed. Caine and Diana from Michael Grant's GONE series are incredible. I want to be friends with Gaby from the Rephiam Series by Paula Weston. But I would love to meet Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, Tris Prior and Augustus Waters of course, who wouldn't?

3. Who is your least favourite fictional character?

This is a lot harder than I thought it would be because I like most characters, especially the bad guys. I guess I hated Julian from the Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver. I've just realised who my least favourite fictional character is and that's Daisy from Meg Rosoff's How I Live Now which I hated from start to finish.

4. Have you read a book/book series that you felt was underrated?

The Unearthly trilogy by Cynthia Hand was incredible and yet I've never heard of anyone else reading it. I have no idea why this is because I loved the entire thing. I read books one and two in three or four days!

5. Have you read a book/book series that you felt was overrated?

I read the first Vampire Academy book and thought it was just awful. Also How I Live Now, which I've already mentioned. I can't believe how much fuss that book made.

6. What's your favourite book genre?

 YA all the way.

7. Who is your favourite author?

I have a few: Carrie Ryan, for writing what she loves; Patrick Ness for taking me on crazy adventures; Michael Grant for all the action; and John Green for all the emotions.

8. What is your favourite book?

Evil question number two. My all time favourite books are The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Dead-Tossed Waves and The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan.

9. How long does it take you to finish a book? (depending on it's length, of course.)

If I like the book, between two days and a week, regardless of its size. If I don't like it, possibly over a month.

10. Have you ever cried over a book? (If so, which one/ones?)

Okay, deep breath, here we go. Harry Potter, Mockingjay (The Hunger Games), Allegiant (Divergent), The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Before I Die, Life on the Refrigerator Door, LIGHT (GONE), The Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking), Hallowed (Unearthly), I Don't Want to Kill You (I Am Not a Serial Killer), Son's of Destiny (Darren Shan), The Book Thief, Raging Star (Dustlands) and probably a million more!

11. What book would you recommend that everyone should read?

This will have to be a list again. The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness, The Forest of Hands and Teeth Trilogy by Carrie Ryan, The Rephiam Series by Paula Weston and The Dustlands Trilogy by Moira Young.

That took longer than I thought! So here are the people I tag:

Squonk (adventureswithsquonk), Chloe (poeticchances), Lily Anna (lilyannablog) and Georgia (storiesinbooks)
(Unfortunately I don't know 11 bloggers so you have my permission to tag yourself!)

And here are your questions, they're all book related!

1. What book character do think is most like you?
2. Do you prefer the goodies or the badies and why?
3. Do you ever get annoyed when literary characters do stupid things? Do you have an example?
4. What book disappointed you most?
5. What book surpassed your expectations most?
6. What genre are you sick of?
7. What do you prefer to read, a long series or a stand alone novel?
8. Where's your favourite place to read?
9. Which fictional character would you like to meet?
10. If all the books in the world were getting destroyed and you could only save five, which five would those be and why?
11. Who's your favourite author that most people don't know of?

Sorry that took me so long to finish! This blog post has been in my drafts for over a year but finally I got round to it.

Thanks to all the amazing bloggers out there and everyone listening to them!

Burn - Paula Weston

Burn is book four in the fantastic Rephiam Series. Please be aware that Shadows, Haze and Shimmer come before this!

A Spoiler Free Bit About The Book

Gaby remembers everything . . .

My Review

What can I say? I knew I'd love this book before it was even out. There's just something about this universe and these characters that makes me want to read and read and read and never put the books down. I was so excited to read the prologue I had to stop myself making excited noises and my heart was racing. Like all other readers, I was desperate to know Gaby's whole story at last.

Weston went about this in the absolute best way. Instead of trying to explain all that had happened leading up to Gaby's memory loss and making the writing clunky and awkward, Weston let us live it with her. And when I'm alongside Gaby, I'm all kinds of ready. It was fascinating to be beside Gabe for once and not the Gaby I'd come to know and love.

It was amazing how Gaby and Gabe were the same person a year apart and yet they were so different. Gaby's much softer and . . . wait, I really want this to make sense . . . Gaby has more memories and therefore sees the world a little differently and that subtle difference between the past and present in this story makes me want to bow down to Weston because it is nothing short of perfection.

And just as I get my head round explaining that, Weston blows me away by doing so in less than fifteen words:
"I've been someone else for a whole year; I'm a different shape now."
As with all four of these books, you get a such-a-long-day kind of feeling as you battle right beside Gaby. It's incredible that I can feel as though I'm living all of it. It really is a masterpiece.

I was in the middle of  Burn for about thirty-three hours. Twenty-five of which I was awake and obsessing about it. I couldn't sleep for thinking about it. Then, when it was all over, I was so lost. I felt like I was missing something . . . no, someone.

I miss Gaby already!

FAVOURITE BOOK OF THE YEAR!

Evaluation

Overall 10/10

Would I recommend it? Yes! In a heartbeat!

Would I look up the author? Yes but I don't have to.

Burn was everything I was expecting and then a whole lot more.

Books Nobody's Reading That Everyone Should Be Reading for #IreadYA

It's #IreadYA week over at This is Teen and what a perfect opportunity to promote some of my favourite books!

They need some serious love!

Being popular and incredible is something rare to me. There are so many popular books that don't deserve even a portion of the fame they have achieved. But incredible books that are underrated - now that's my thing. Here's a list of some of my favourite books. All of these are worth your time. And also worth way more hype than they got.

Before you bite my head off, I know some of these are best sellers but that doesn't mean I've ever heard people talk about them. Like I said, these books are worth way more hype then they got.

This time I tried to be ruthless and put them in order of how much I think these books need to be read but they all need to be read. So read them!

The Dustlands Trilogy - Moira Young
(Blood Red Road, Rebel Heart, Raging Star)

The Forest of Hands and Teeth Trilogy - Carrie Ryan
(The Forest of Hands & Teeth, The Dead-Tossed Waves, The Dark & Hollow Places)

The Rephiam Series - Paula Weston
(Shadows, Haze, Shimmer - plus more to come)

Anna Dressed in Blood - Kendare Blake

The Reapers are the Angels - Alden Bell

The Unearthly Trilogy - Cynthia Hand
(Unearthly, Hallowed, Boundless)

The Other Life - Susanne Winnacker

The Lorien Legacies - Pittacus Lore
(I am Number Four, The Power of Six - am yet to read the rest)

Maybe One Day - Melissa Kantor

Starters - Lissa Price

So pick one of these fantastic books up, grab a glass or mug of something and settle into a wonderful summer of book discoveries.
